The Methane Monster

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE INCOMING PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, THE UNITED STATES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND US AND CANADIAN OIL AND GAS CORPORATIONS:


IT IS NOW CLEARLY EVIDENT THAT THE WORLD’S CLIMATE IS CHANGING SO FAST THAT WE CANNOT STOP IT BECAUSE WE HAVE HEATED UP THE OCEANS BEYOND THEIR TIPPING POINTS. YAKUTIA IS 3 DEGREES CENTIGRADE HOTTER AND THE SURFACE PERMAFROSTS ARE MELTING, ATMOSPHERIC METHANE LEVELS ARE SURGING AND THE SEA IS BOILING WITH METHANE AROUND BENNET ISLAND IN THE EAST SIBERIAN SEA (IGOR SEMELITOV, TOMSK POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSTY). IN THE ARCTIC METHANE AIR CONCENTRATIONS HAVE REACHED 16000 PARTS PER BILLION SOME 6.7 TIMES HIGHER THAN THAT REQUIRED TO CAUSE A “PERMIAN STYLE” GLOBAL EXTINCTION EVENT. IGOR SEMILETOV, NATALIA SHAKOVA AND I DISCUSSED THE EXTREME THREAT THE SUBSEA PERMAFROST ARCTIC METHANE POSED AT A CONGRESS IN NICE 17 YEARS AGO AND NOW OUR VERY WORST FEARS ARE COMING TO FRUITION. HOWEVER WE CAN STILL PREVENT OUR NEAR TERM EXTINCTION BY REMOVING THE GIANT ARCTIC METHANE THREAT BY DRAINING THE SUBSEA ARCTIC OCEAN PERMAFROSTS OF THEIR HUGE METHANE RESERVES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA SHOULD BE WORKING WITH RUSSIA ON A WAR FOOTING, EXTRACTING ALL THE METHANE IN THE LAPTEV SEA BY DRILLING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF WELLS INTO THE SUBSEA PERMAFROST: THE METHANE SHOULD BE SOLD TO EUROPE AND THE REST OF THE WORLD AS THE PREFERENTIAL GREEN ENERGY FUEL VIA NORDSTREAM AND TO OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD USING GAS TANKER TRANSPORT. ANY METHANE THAT IS ABLE TO ESCAPE FROM THE SUBSEA ARCTIC PERMAFROST INTO THE ATMOSPHERE HAS MORE THAN 10 TIMES THE WARMING POTENTIAL OF CARBON DIOXIDE AND IF ONLY 1% OF THE ARCTIC METHANE RESERVES IS RELEASED IT WILL CAUSE A TERMINAL CATASTROPHIC GLOBAL EXTINCTION EVENT KILLING EVERYTHING ON THE PLANET. ALL OF EUROPE SHOULD BE BURNING ARCTIC PERMAFROST GAS BECAUSE EVERY BIT THAT IS LEFT IN THE PERMAFROST IS GOING TO ERUPT AND CAUSE A CATASTROPHIC ARCTIC METHANE DESTABILIZATION AND METHANE BLOWOUT EVENT IN THREE TO FIVE YEARS WHICH WILL END ALL LIFE ON EARTH WHEN THE AVERAGE GLOBAL STRATOSPHERIC METHANE CONTENT EXCEEDS 2390 PARTS PER BILLION, THE MEAN SURFACE TEMPERATURES WILL BE TEN DEGREES CENTIGRADE ABOVE AVERAGE AND WE WILL BE FACING A PERMIAN STYLE TERMINAL GLOBAL EXTINCTION EVENT. AT THE MOMENT THE AVERAGE STRATOSPHERIC METHANE OVER THE USA IS 2080 PARTS PER BILLION. IN FRANCE IT REACHED 2008 PARTS PER BILLION WITH A 9.5 DEGREE CENTIGRADE TEMPERATURE INCREASE THIS SUMMER.

THE ANGELS PROJECT – PREVENTION OF ARCTIC SURFACE AND SUBSEA PERMAFROST METHANE ERUPTIONS

Extreme, high and moderate priority submarine Arctic methane hydrate atmospheric methane emissions zones/torches are outlined in red, magenta and pink on Figure 1. The methane eruption centres are from AIRS satellite data (Saldo, 2012). These zones form an extreme threat to humanity and require immediate subpermafrost and submarine methane extraction. At surface facilities the separated methane will be processed in Floating Liquified Natural gas (FLNG) plants and stored in Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) Tankers for sale to customers as a “green energy” alternative to coal and oil for electric power generation, air and ground transport, home heating and cooking and for the manufacture of hydrogen, fertilizers, fabrics, glass, steel, plastics, paint and other products.

The prevention of Arctic methane eruptions between 2019 and 2023 will require high volume methane extraction from below the subsea Arctic methane hydrates. Directional boreholes need to be drilled from platforms located in the stable areas between the leaking talik/fault zones (Figures 2). Direct drainage of the free methane will reverse the flow of methane and seawater in the taliks and shut down the uncontrolled methane sea floor eruptions. The controlled access of globally warmed seawater drawn through the open talik zones to the base of the methane hydrate permafrost cap will gradually destabilize the methane hydrate allowing complete extraction of all the gas from the methane hydrate reserves.
